Yes, from the title you may be thinking, what on earth? And you would be within your rights in doing so. On Tuesday this week, my friend Jen and I headed to W.C in Clapham which is in fact the former public toilets by Clapham Common underground station. It has very much changed since then however. There are still some original features but gone are the cubicles, instead replaced with comfy booths and cosy little tables for two. The space is really quite small, intimate and candle-lit making it the perfect place for a date. W.C. now stands for Wine and Charcuterie and they offer extensive selections of both.
We opted for a bottle of the Tempranillo, an organic variety that was apparently new on the menu and was delicious. They offer larger plates but we thought we would go for a sharing platter of cheese and charcuterie which was accompanied by mini gherkins and freshly baked sourdough bread. With three types of cheese and three types of salami on offer, the platter was the perfect amount for two hungry girls for supper.
I loved the quirkiness of the place and I actually forgot that I was eating in a former public toilet and felt instead that I was in Paris – that was a bit of a shock when I emerged at the end of the evening and was in actual fact by Clapham Common tube. I have already told multiple people about this little hidden gem and I will definitely be returning very soon to sample some more wine and charcuterie.
